Research Interests
Louise Emmons studies the ecology of tropical mammals, and has worked in Gabon, Madagascar, Borneo, Papua New Guinea, and ten countries of the New World tropics. Her current research includes a systematic revision of Echimyine rodents of South America and a long term study of the mammal faunas at the savanna-forest interface in Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado, Bolivia (in its tenth year). The latter includes radio-telementry studies of maned wolves, as well as community studies of small terrestrial mammals and bats. Local university students participate in the research in Bolivia. Her previous work included many mammal surveys for biological inventories with Conservation International's Rapid Assessment Program, and studies of an array of mammals, from treeshrews to brush-tailed porcupines and ocelots. She is currently an Adjunct Scientist of the Division of Mammals, Smithsonian Institution, a scientific advisor to the Amazon Conservation Association (Washington, DC), and on the editorial boards of Neotropical Fauna and Environment and Mammalia.
