The maxillary crest is alternately called a maxillary prominence. These crests vary in height and robustness between species of beaked whale.

The maxillary crest rises 0 - 10 mm higher than the height of the premaxillaries where the latter passes between the former.
   
The maxillary crest rises 15 mm or more higher than the height of the premaxillaries where the latter passes between the former.
