The division staff consists of people employed by both the SI Department of Vertebrate Zoology and the Biological Survey Unit of the United States Geological Survey, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Since 1889, the Biological Survey has had a formal partnership with Smithsonian in which the Survey has had curatorial responsibility for the North American Terrestrial Vertebrate Collection. The curators of the division are research scientists. They use the collections on a daily basis for research and assist with collection management activities.
